Chalong
Chalong is Phuket’s largest bay stretching over 11 km on the south-eastern shore of Phuket. Despite the size, the bay is not suitable for swimming; it is mostly residential and business area, as well as important port with boats from Chalong pier heading out to smaller islands in Phang Nga bay
Chalong’s attraction include Big Buddha - a giant Buddha statue sitting on the hills between Chalong and Kata, Wat Chalong - Buddhist temple and historical landmark, as well as Chalong Bay rum distillery (yes, they do offer tasting tours).
Chalong pier is one of the most important (if not the most important) piers and anchorages in the entire province, many diving and snorkeling trips and other boat tours start from here.
The center of Chalong is Chalong Circle - a five-way roundabout with roads going to Rawai, Kata/Karon, Patong, Phuket town and Chalong pier. The roundabout has recently had underpass added to it.
Due to convenient location with easy access to Phuket and Rawai/Nai Harn, Chalong is a popular area to stay for working expats and locals.
Despite being less touristy than the beaches on the western side of the island, Chalong has a fair share of beach bars and street bars, mostly focused in the area between Chalong Circle and the pier.
For your shopping needs there is Villa Market supermarket, as well as Homepro and Tesco. Central Festival is 10-15 minutes away.
The area also has a number of Muay Thay camps and a ridiculous amount of gyms, fitness facilities, spas and health shops (Soi Ta-iad is a prominent example, consisting almost exclusively of Muay Thay camps and gyms).
