Thai Land Measurements

Thailand has its own system of area unit measurements. While metric system has been adopted for almost a century - since December 17th 1923 - traditional measurements are still widely used, especially when it comes to land. Here are the basics:

  • Tarang wah (square wah). Wah is a unit of length equal to 2 metres, so 1 square wah equals to 4 square meters.
  • Ngan. 1 ngan = 100 square wah = 400 sqm
  • Rai. 1 Rai = 4 ngan = 400 square wah = 1600 sqm

There is also a specific format used for land sizes, for example, when land size is stated as 2-1-10, it means: ‘2 Rai, 1 ngan, 10 sq. wah.’ (21600 + 1400 + 10*4 = 3640 sqm).
