The Guardian Visa for Students in Thailand
Feb. 10, 2025

Thailand is ranked among the top 8 most affordable countries for expats according to InterNations 2024 survey. The country secured first place for cost of living, with most respondents noting easy access to affordable housing.

Many of our clients relocate with children, and we often recommend local international schools. The education quality is excellent — graduates gain admission to prestigious universities in the US, UK, and other countries. This education option is growing in popularity: Phuket's international school enrollment increased by 31% in 2022-2023 and another 17% in 2023-2024.

Parents gain an additional benefit — eligibility for a one-year guardian visa (Non-Immigrant Visa Category "O"). This presents an ideal solution for long-term stays during children's education.

Visa requirements:

  • Completed visa application form (TM.7)
  • Child's birth certificate
  • Letter from the school confirming the child’s enrollment
  • Proof of residence in Thailand, such as a house registration or lease agreement
  • Passport valid for a minimum of 6 months
  • At least THB 500,000 in a Thai bank account (funds must remain for 2 months before initial application and 3 months before each renewal)

💡 Important: Only one parent/guardian per student can obtain this visa.

Three-step visa process:

  1. Initial application at Thai embassy/consulate in home country — 90-day visa issued
  2. Extension in Thailand — one year with an annual renewal option
  3. Regular reporting — address update to immigration every 90 days (in person, mail, or online)

An increasing number of families are selecting premium education for their children in one of Asia's most livable countries. If you're considering relocating to Thailand, explore our guide to Phuket's top international schools.
